Circo Sparks: one event model for engagement

Views, likes, shares, comments and recircos turned into a single event stream, where every action carries value for both the fan and the creator.

The problem

Every interaction on a creator platform is a signal, but each one usually lives in its own table with its own meaning. That makes it hard to answer simple questions, such as which posts are actually working, and impossible to reward the people who make them work.

My role

I conceived Sparks, designed its event model and built it with my team, from the service to the analytics models.

How it works

One event shape. Each kind of interaction is staged separately and then unified into a single event model, so a view and a share can be compared and summed.
Two sides to every action. Each event carries a value for the fan who acted and a value for the creator who earned it. That fan/creator split is the core idea.

The Sparks Dynamo runs the same model: change how an audience behaves and watch the fan and creator sides move differently.

From stream to summary. A service consumes the event stream and analytics models roll it up into daily per-post summaries: totals, a breakdown by interaction type, unique users and audience mix.
Points, not cash. Sparks measure and reward engagement on the platform. They are not redeemable for money.
