Scheduled live from recorded video

A design for live-feeling premieres built on the existing video pipeline: a manifest that only reveals what has 'aired' so far.

Architect

The idea

Instead of running live encoders, a scheduled premiere is simulated from a recorded upload. At any moment the playlist exposes only the segments whose running time fits inside now minus the scheduled start. Viewers can rewind, but cannot skip ahead of the broadcast, and chat stays in sync.

Why this approach

Managed live encoding was evaluated and set aside for the first version: it adds cost and operational weight, while the simulated approach reuses the upload, transcoding, packaging and CDN path that already exists.

Adaptive streaming and the transcoding ladder

Every upload becomes a ladder of renditions, packaged once for HLS and DASH and served from the edge, so every phone gets the best stream its connection can hold. Live in production.
