“I need a dollar, just to survive.” Aloe Blacc
That one line captures the insatiable, global hunger for the US dollar. It’s not just a catchy lyric; it's an economic truth. Everywhere you look, demand for dollars shows up like a ghost you can’t ignore:
The US Dollar's Global Dominance
Dollars dominate global trade:
The USD is the world’s reserve currency, the medium of exchange in most international transactions. This gives the U.S. an unmatched edge: lower borrowing costs, smoother trade, and power that transcends borders.
Over $1 trillion in physical dollars held outside the U.S
Over two-thirds of $100 bills and around half of all physical dollars are abroad. That’s not just because the dollar is strong; it’s trusted, stable, and liquid.
More than $12 trillion in dollar-denominated debt issued by non-U.S. entities:
Global banks and companies need dollars to trade, to invest, to survive. The dollar is the benchmark for value and safety in a volatile world.
Enter Stablecoins
Stablecoins are digital currencies pegged to fiat currencies (mostly the U.S. dollar). They blend the stability of traditional money with the efficiency and programmability of crypto. And I believe global access to dollars will increasingly come through stablecoins, not banks.
Why Stablecoins Matter
Fast and cheap cross-border payments
No delays. No high fees. No intermediaries.
Dollar stability without needing a U.S. bank account
Anyone, anywhere, can hold digital dollars.
Crypto-native users already trust and use stablecoins daily
This isn’t hypothetical. Stablecoins are already growing rapidly:
In 2017, total stablecoins in circulation were under $3 billion. Today, they exceed $125 billion. That’s a 40x increase, driven by: The rise of crypto adoption. The inefficiencies of the traditional financial system. New stablecoin offerings from mainstream platforms like PayPal
The Future (And What We’re Building at Yuki)
At Yuki, we believe stablecoins can revolutionize financial access, especially across emerging markets.
Whether it’s for Payments, Savings, Investment, or building new rails for cross-border commerce. Stablecoins provide a dollar gateway without needing a passport, paperwork, or privilege. We’re building with that vision at the core: unbundling financial services, powered by trustless infrastructure and programmable money
